Paul Lucas clueless on Google Maps

07.18.08 Posted in News by

I had to laugh out loud when I read that Deputy Premier Paul Lucas was up in arms about Google’s satellite imagery of Queensland. He said;

“Google is often associated with cutting edge internet services but when it comes to growth in Queensland, they’re behind the times.”

Mr Lucas said he wrote today to Google chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt, asking him to take new snapshots of the state to include its new roads, buildings and bridges.

Our Deputy leader needs to understand something (that he would understand if he had bothered to check out the Google Earth FAQ) about Google Earth; Namely, that Google do not create the imagery, they buy it from commercial satellite services. And in order to keep the cost to the end user at zero, they buy older stuff with less value.

If Google were to provide up to date imagery world wide, I cannot even begin to imagine what it would cost.

But the really funny thing here is that if Paul Lucas really wanted updated imagery, all he has to do is pay for aerial photos of the things he wants and send the the data to Google, and they’ll happily include it in the product.
