Optus drops iPhone registration

06.19.08 Posted in News by

Optus have stopped accepting deposits for clients to get in early to buy the new iPhone on July 11th. No word from Optus on why they have done this, so speculation has been rife. Some think that the company Optus partnered with is to blame, with their seemingly insecure website. I tend to agree, as I am one of those people who signed up and paid my deposit, and just yesterday ANZ rang me to tell me my credit card details had been stolen and were being used in the US.

Another possibility is that Optus had so many people putting deposits down they are worried they won’t be able to get them through the door in the 2 hour window they’ve set aside for them. In the larger cities, I’m thinking that may well be the case.

In any event, we wait impatiently for Optus and Vodaphone to announce pricing and other details. Why it is taking so long is anyones guess, but perhaps its just that both companies want the other one to go first, so they can trump their offer?
