New cool stuff from Apple

Its the iPhone without the phone, the Apple iPod Touch brings the cool new touch screen interface the iPhone is famous (in the US, not available anywhere else yet!) for  to the iPod lineup. Apple have a snazzy guided tour that will show you all the wondrous new features. Unlike the iPhone, this little baby is apparently available in Australia, although the Apple website only lists preorders available at this stage. Pricing down under is $419 for the 8 Gig and $549 for the 16 Gig. Thats one expensive toy!

Also new is the new model iPod Nano. Its shorter than the old one, and at least in the photos I’ve seen looks reasonable. It now plays video, although the screen is tiny, I doubt anyone will seriously be doing this. The 4 Gig model is $199 and only comes in white, while the 8 Gig model at $279 comes in a variety of colours. They have a (PRODUCT) RED version, from which Apple donates a portion of sales to help fight HIV/AIDS in Africa. While its supposed to be red, the photos on the apple website make it look pink to me. I bet pink will sell better than red ever did, the girls seem to love it.

The old faithful hard drive based iPod is now called the iPod Classic, and comes in 80 and 160 Gig flavours for $349 to $479. As always, don’t expect to see significant discounts in stores, the wholesale price of these things is very close to the retail price Apple sells to the public for, so most stores are only stocking them because they draw people in.

And finally, if you are buying someone an iPod as a present, consider getting it from the Apple Store direct, because they will laser engrave the back of it for you for free!
