Security Tokens – the best online security

After yesterdays article about credential stealing trojans, I thought I would mention to our readers and clients that many banks are now offering security tokens to help secure your internet banking.

Scammers use “phishing” to steal your internet banking login; They do this by emailing you a very authentic looking email asking you to urgently log into your internet banking, and they provide a link in the email for you to do just that. The problem is, the link refers you to THEIR website, not the banks, and it looks just the same as your banks. When you login, they record your password, and the more sophisticated ones actually log you into the REAL banking website, so as far as you are concerned, nothing untoward has happened.

Now that they have your login details, they just login and transfer your money out to wherever they want. As I said yesterday, the easiest way to guard against this is to NEVER click a link you get via email, no matter WHO it might claim to be from.

Another good security measure is the security token. This is a special little gadget that spits out a code every minute or so, and you have to type that code in to get into your banking online. The code is a generated by a cryptographic system, so there is no way for a hacker to figure out what the code might be at any given moment in time.

Using this system (as I do), even if I give you my username and password for my internet banking, you still can’t get in, because only I have the security token and can see the code.

If you are serious about online security, ring your bank today and request one. Suncorp only charge $20 for them.
