Don’t believe everything you read…

I just came across an interesting piece over at wired, talking about the sudden resignation of PC World’s Editor in Chief. Basically, he quit because the powers that be over at PC World started telling him that the magazine need to cover advertisers products more favourably, and that certain topics, such as bashing Apple, were off limits.

This is a public example of what many already know privately; That any magazine reviewing products should be read with a wary eye; You can’t possibly know what bias the writer has for or against the product they are reviewing, and so you can never be sure the review is fair and accurate.

I remember seeing a round up of video cameras some years back in Choice magazine; I couldn’t understand how they rated one particular camera so highly, when at the time the store I worked at was getting every second one back for repair. In that case, not only was the product testing not robust enough, but Choice didn’t even do it, they just bought a review from a German magazine. (some of the cameras were not even available in Australia).
