Azureus Partners with the BBC to Sell TV Shows

A few of our clients have heard of software called BitTorrent. This is a great bit of software that allows users to download files quickly, by getting small chunks of the file from a lot of other users who already have it.

Azureus is one of a swag of “BitTorrent” clients, programs which are made to be compatible with BitTorrent. It has proven to be very popular, although I tend to reccomend uTorrent these days.

News today that the guys behind Azureus have signed a deal with the BBC in the UK to distribute BBC television programs via the BitTorrent mechanism. This is great news for two reasons; Firstly, it gives another outlet for distributing video, and the more outlets we have the better chance of one of them getting the model right.

Secondly, its going to prove that a distributed model like BitTorrent can work for the people selling the video. BitTorrent has the double edged advantage of generally allowing users to get files at the highest speed their internet connection is capable of, while vastly reducing the costs to the distributor because most of the file a user downloads comes from other users.

The popular BitTorrent client, Azureus has just struck a deal with the BBC to offer TV shows on its recently launched content store/website, Zudeo.
