New use for Sugar – Plastics!
Turns out the boffins can make Plastic from sugar. The ABC reports that while there is still work to be done, this could be a great leap forward in carbon neutral resources. If it can be commercialised, I bet the sugar farmers will be happy

This assumes, of course, that the amount of petro-chemicals required to grow the sugar is less that what would be used to make the plastic. Vast amounts of petrochemical fertalizers, pesticides and fuel are used in the production of agricultural crops. Turning thouse agricultural crops back into what were traditionally petrochemical products seems like a vastly innefficient way to do things.
